Here we have a French oak bench fitted with a 29th century splint mill, a roller for preparing straw, reed & cane prior to plaiting old seats and straw hats. Straw, reed & cane would have been steamed anbd bleached and then passed through the splint mill rollers several times where it was squeezed and flattened to make it suitably soft for plaiting. The gap between the rollers is adjusted using the super large wooden screw. A one off very tactile bench that is both functional & characterful and sure to provoke questions.
